First prototype on the road within a few years
BMW will send its first electric car with a solid-state battery on the road before 2025. The brand is expanding its partnership with Solid Power to make that possible.
BMW seems to like to spread its chances. It focuses on a wide range of drive technologies and offers various models not only with mild hybrid petrol and diesel engines, but also with plug-in hybrid and even fully electric powertrains. The brand is also committed to the development of hydrogen technology and is working hard behind the scenes on the development of what is seen as the holy grail in EV land, the solid state battery. It does this in collaboration with developer Solid Power, among others. BMW is strengthening its partnership with Solid Power and says it will put its first demonstration vehicle with a solid-state battery on the road before 2025.
BMW has signed a licensing agreement with Solid Power that will allow the German manufacturer to build a prototype of the solid-state battery that BMW and Solid Power are co-developing at its Cell Manufacturing Competence Center in Parsdorf, Germany. In its own words, BMW confirms, among other things, that it takes the development of solid-state batteries very seriously. The fact that an electric BMW with solid-state batteries will hit the road before 2025 does not mean that the technology is actually suitable for mass production. In the middle of last year, Reuters wrote, based on an interview with the CEO of Solid Power, that the technology may already be ready for series production in 2026.
