Transport minister speaks again
The German Transport Minister Volker Wissing has once again spoken out against the introduction of a speed limit on the German autobahn. According to him, this would be superfluous, partly due to the rise of the electric car, for which high speeds are disastrous for the driving range.
The discussion about whether or not to introduce a general speed limit on German motorways rears its head every few months, including now. Invariably, the more climate-friendly parties are in favor and the more liberal parties are against. This also applies now, because Minister of Transport Volker Wissing (of the liberal party FDP) speaks out against it – not for the first time. He does this opposite the German Bild am Sonntag. He considers a speed limit unnecessary, because the increased energy prices are already encouraging motorists to drive more slowly. In addition, the increasing number of ‘electric’ drivers often do not benefit from speeding, because their batteries drain significantly faster at high speeds. In all likelihood, the 130 limit on large parts of the German motorway network will (for the time being) therefore remain an advisory speed limit.
Wissing believes that maintaining an appropriate speed on the autobahn should remain the responsibility of the motorist. According to him, the state should play a ‘restraint role’ in this regard. In addition, the minister is also in favor of expanding the capacity of German speeds by adding more lanes here and there. The amount of cars and freight traffic continues to increase in Germany, increasing the risk of traffic jams.
