On a different basis
The high word is out: there will be an electric model in addition to the Ineos Grenadier. The off-roader, which can only be ordered with fuel engines for the time being, will be joined by a fully electric all-terrain executioner at another base. It just takes a while.
Production of the Ineos Grenadier, the first model from Ineos Automotive, started last fall. A clear off-roader inspired by the old Land Rover Defender that draws its power from BMW’s 3.0 six-in-line. For the time being, only petrol and diesel power sources are used in the Grenadier, but Ineos also sees the potential in electric propulsion. The first rumors about this came out a year ago, now it is getting a little more concrete.
A fully electric Grenadier will not be available, an electric model will appear next to the Grenadier in 2026. That explains commercial director Mark Tennant in conversation with the Australian Drive. Why not an electric Grenadier? Well, Ineos takes a completely different approach. The Ineos Grenadier stands on a ladder chassis, where the newcomer sits on a skateboard-EV platform rest. From whom that base comes, Tennant still leaves in the middle. “We are of course looking at whether we can take over from the Grenadier, some parts, but it will not have a loader chassis. It will be a skateboard because it’s simply the right path for range and other capabilities,” said Tennant.
Will there be no version of the Grenadier with an electric drive at all? Well, not an EV with just a battery, but probably one with a fuel cell. In October 2021, Ineos already showed a Grenadier that (hypothetically or not) had a fuel cell from Hyundai on board. That was a very early preview, because at the beginning of last year Ineos stated that a hydrogen Grenadier will not be available until 2027.
