Toyota beats Volkswagen again: again the biggest

The annual game of automobile urination has been won by Toyota for the third year in a row. Toyota and its subsidiaries sold almost 2.6 million more cars than the Volkswagen Group in 2022, making them the largest car manufacturer in the world again.

Toyota Motor Corporation sold 10,483,024 vehicles last year. That was only 0.1 percent less than last year. That nearly 10.5 million cars sold not only includes vehicles from Toyota and Lexus, but also from subsidiaries Daihatsu and Hino. The Volkswagen Group kicked it up to 8,262,800 cars sold in 2022. The figures of the Volkswagen Group not only include the performance of the Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, Skoda, Cupra, Bentley and Porsche brands, but also MAN, Scania and Navistar. Toyota Motor Corporation is ahead of the Volkswagen Group with just under 2.6 million vehicles.

The Toyota brand accounted for 8,941,596 cars sold in 2022. Lexus kicked it to 625,365 copies. As a result, Lexus sales in 2022 lagged behind last year by just under 18 percent. In Europe, Lexus sales decreased by 32.6 percent to 47,304 units compared to 2021 last year. Daihatsu sold 5.6 percent more cars worldwide in 2022 than in 2021. This concerned a total of 766,091 units.

Asia is by far the most important sales market for Toyota Motor Corporation. The company sold 3,324,735 cars there last year, 6 percent more than in 2021. No less than 1.94 percent of these (-0.2 percent) found an owner in China. Home country Japan charges Toyota separately. Last year, Toyota sold 1,289,132 cars in Japan, almost 13 percent less than in 2021. North America (United States, Canada and Mexico) also remains an important market for Toyota Motor Corporation. The company sold 2,445,126 cars there in 2022 (-8.8 percent). In South America, sales increased by 23.2 percent to 474,564 units. In Europe, Toyota Motor Corporation sales were 0.1 percent higher than in 2021 at 1,032,159 units. Other regions where the Japanese recorded growth were Australia and New Zealand (280,120 units, +2.3 percent), the Central East (495,572 units, +18.4 percent) and Africa (225,554 units, +5.4 percent).

Electric

Of the 9.57 million cars that Toyota and Lexus sold together in 2022, 24,466 were fully electric (+69 percent). More than 90,000 had a plug-in hybrid powertrain (-19.2 percent). In addition, Toyota sold a small 4,000 Mirais (FCEV) in 2022. On EV level, the Volkswagen Group wins the battle. It sold about 330,000 EVs in 2022, a small 24 percent more than in 2021.
