Up to 570 kilometers range and packed as standard
Conquering the European market by the Chinese Xpeng is not going smoothly yet. Xpeng reloads the electric weapons and this year brings two promising models to the market, including this Xpeng G9. This Xpeng G9 is an electric SUV that is practically the same size as the Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV, but costs €34,000 less.
Highlights Xpeng G9
- Just as big as Mercedes-Benz EQE and Nio EL7
- Standard packed and relatively friendly priced
- Up to 570 kilometers range
- Also as AWD Performance with over 500 hp
The list of Chinese brands that have or want to sink their teeth into the European market is growing by the month. For example, it was recently announced that Geely wants to bring its Zeekr brand to Europe. We have known for some time that Xpeng’s European expansion drive keeps management awake at night. At the end of 2020 it was announced that the brand would cross over to Europe and a few months later the first copies of the Xpeng G3 were delivered in Norway. That Xpeng G3 did not come to the Netherlands. The electric sedan Xpeng P5 would have the chance to win the hearts of the Dutch consumer, but those plans ended up in the fridge. And now? No problem. Xpeng is back and launches two new models on the Dutch market. The largest of these is this Xpeng G9, a large electric SUV, which, given the Dutch prices on paper, is already a very interesting offer.
Before we discuss the prices with you, we must first deal with the car itself, because what is an Xpeng G9 again? The avid visitor of AutoWeek.nl will undoubtedly look somewhat familiar to the model. We wrote about it back in November 2021 when Xpeng unveiled the car in China. AutoWeek could later confirm that the Xpeng G9 would also come to Europe and now it is finally here.
Dimensions
The Xpeng G9 is a 4.89 meter long SUV that can accommodate five occupants. For comparison: the Xpeng G8 is about 25 centimeters longer than, say, a Skoda Enyaq iV. In terms of size, you can therefore better compare the Xpeng G9 with the Nio EL7, a few centimeters shorter Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV. Quite a colossus, that G9. The wheelbase of the 1.94 meter wide and 1.68 meter high electric SUV is 3 meters after 2 millimeters. That promises something for the interior space.
The Xpeng G9 is certainly spacious. Without folding the rear seats, you can store no less than 660 liters in it. Significantly more than the EQE SUV, which kicks it up to 520 liters. In addition, the Xpeng G9 also has a so-called frank has, so a luggage compartment under the front cover, although you can not store much here with 70 liters. If you throw the back seat flat, you can carry up to 1,575 liters of stuff in the G9. With the rear seats folded down, the EQE SUV beats Xpeng’s space giant with 100 liters.
Design
In terms of design, the Xpeng G9 is neatly in line with what the Grand Handbook of Auto Design in 2023 seems to prescribe. The Xpeng G9 has flat and optically interconnected LED daytime running lights, with the actual LED headlights a floor below. Xpeng gives the G9 recessed door handles, a roofline that flows into the D-pillar relatively early and ends in a roof spoiler to make the car appear smaller than it is. At the very rear, the rear lights are housed in an LED bar running the entire width of the rear. Xpeng has applied a pattern in the part of that LED bar that is located in the tailgate. Above this LED bar we read the brand name Xpeng.
Technology and performance: up to 570 kilometers of range
It gets more interesting with the technical specifications. The Xpeng G9 comes to the Netherlands with three different powertrains. Those engine versions have names that you also encounter with brands such as Tesla. There are Standard Range and Long Range versions with rear-wheel drive and a Performance called top version with two electric motors and therefore four-wheel drive. Each Xpeng G9 has 800V on-board voltage and can tow up to 1,500 kilograms.
The Xpeng G9 Standard Range has a 313 hp and 430 Nm strong electric motor on the rear axle that helps the SUV weighing at least 2,235 kilos to a speed of 100 km / h in 6.4 seconds. Its top speed, like that of any other G9, is limited to 200 km / h. If you don’t try to approach those kinds of figures, the 78.2 kWh battery offers you a range of 460 kilometers (WLTP). Fast charging is possible with up to 260 kW and that is certainly not wrong either.
The Xpeng G9 Long Range has the same electric motor as the Standard Range, but it does have a larger battery pack. The Xpeng G9 Long Range has an electric lung capacity of 98 kWh, which gives it a range of no less than 570 kilometers. This battery pack can also be filled with farm-fresh electricity with a maximum of 300 kW.
At the top of the status ladder, the Xpeng G9 Performance holds sway. It has the same 313 hp electric motor on the rear axle, but also has a 238 hp and 287 Nm strong one on the front axle. That gives the G9 Performance a system power of 551 hp and 717 Nm. This stomps the G9 in 3.9 seconds to 100 km / h. The G9 Performance has the same 98 kWh battery as the Long Range, but logically squeezes out less range with 520 kilometers.
Standard packed
Xpeng crams the G9 with just about everything it has to offer. For example, the Xpeng G9 has not one and not two, but three digital displays as standard. Behind the wheel is a 10.25-inch model and in the middle you will find a 15-inch measuring infotainment screen. Right next to it, Xpeng also sticks an extra 15-inch display for the co-driver. You can use your phone as a key, there is a digital assistant and things like extensive electrically adjustable, heated and ventilated front seats with memory function, an extensive audio system and leatherette upholstery are all standard. The list goes on with dual-zone climate control, an electrically adjustable rear seatback and V2L technology that lets you charge other devices.
But it does not stop there either. Automatic LED lighting, soft-close doors, a panoramic glass roof and an electrically opening tailgate are standard as well as 19-inch metal. The Performance stands on 21-inch large slippers and has air suspension and an active chassis as standard.
It also has some security systems. Adaptive cruise control, an active lane assistant, a 360-degree camera, an extensive parking system, automatic high beam and practically every system with warning or alert in the name is default. On the option list we find things like a towbar, full leather upholstery, speakers in the headrests, more extensive furniture, extendable footstools and massage function for all seats, including the back.
From just under €58,000
The standard Xpeng G9 Standard Range, already loaded to the roof, has a starting price of €57,990 in the Netherlands. That is serious money, but you get a lot in return. So for just under 58 grand you have a 5 meter long, generously equipped and spacious electric SUV with 313 hp with which you can drive up to 460 kilometers electrically. The Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV, which is comparable in size, costs at least €91,950 and is then 292 hp strong. Depending on the chosen version, the EQE 350+ Business Line has a range of 486 to 594 kilometers. So it comes further, but costs 34 grand more.
The Xpeng G9 Long Range with which you can travel up to 570 kilometers costs €61,990 in the Netherlands. That is also €30,000 less than the EQE 350+. For the fantastic Xpeng G9 Performance you will pay €71,990 in the Netherlands.
A side note on the comparison with the Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV: the fact that the Xpeng G9 and the Mercedes-Benz EQE are similar in terms of performance and dimensions does not immediately mean that the two operate in the same segment. For example, Mercedes-Benz emphatically profiles itself as a premium brand and we do not yet hear Xpeng say that about itself. If we look at another Chinese electric SUV that is coming on the market in the Netherlands, we end up with the Nio EL7 already mentioned. That SUV is available in the Netherlands from €88,900 (including battery, with battery rental €76,900) and for that money has a 75 kWh battery and a range of 394 kilometers. The Nio EL7 with 100 kWh battery and 513 kilometers of range costs €97,900 including battery.
