LeasePlan sees transition

‘Faster from car ownership to car subscription’

Do we no longer want our own car in front of the door, but rather one that we pay monthly and eventually have to return? LeasePlan says this shift is underway and even accelerating.

Are we on our way to a society in which private car ownership disappears? Some seem to hope for it and/or sketch it as a realistic picture of the future. A shift can also be seen at LeasePlan. Presenting the annual results for 2022, CEO Tex Gunning states: “Strong growth was achieved in all segments as the shift from car ownership to car subscriptions continued to accelerate. The adoption of electric cars across Europe is accelerating the car subscription trend .” LeasePlan expanded its lease fleet by 7 percent last year.

Is it really the case that private car ownership is on the decline, or is it somewhat? wishful thinking of a company that has a financial interest in it? Figures from Statistics Netherlands and the Association of Dutch Car Leasing Companies (VNA) do not yet clearly show the shift. In 2022, the total private car fleet in the Netherlands grew by 1.6 percent, according to Statistics Netherlands. According to the VNA, the number of cars with a private lease construction grew by the same percentage. Research by Greenwheels recently showed that at least 40 percent of Dutch car owners only give up their own car if they are no longer able to drive themselves.

With more than 7.8 million units, the majority of passenger cars (88.4 percent) are still privately owned. Private lease cars account for about 3 percent of privately driven cars. A year ago, the Knowledge Institute for Mobility Policy outlined the expectation that car ownership will continue to increase in the coming years. Possibly, the introduction of a kilometer charge will also make a difference.
