EVs on the left

D66 has proposed in the municipality of The Hague to reserve a lane especially for electric cars in that city. The left lane, to be exact.
According to the D66 party, the idea does not come from that party itself, but from the residents of the Loosduinen district. According to D66, they are concerned about the ‘busy, noisy and polluting highway on the edge of their district’. The road in question is not a highway at all, but the Lozerlaan. That road – we won’t joke about the name – is part of the N211, four lane and very busy indeed. D66’s proposal is now to reserve the left lane for electric cars in both directions. This so-called e-lane should therefore extend over the connecting Ockenburghstraat and Kijkduinsestraat. D66 council member Peter Mekers: “This is not only a great idea from local residents, but also a great way to show society that electric driving pays off.” Because electric cars are quieter and cleaner, the measure would also have direct benefits for the environment.
Other parties are less enthusiastic about the plan. Council member Ralf Sluijs van Hart for The Hague calls the e-lane the ‘elite lane’ and denounces on Twitter the idea of giving priority to ‘Jantje triple modal’ in this way. “The poor rabble may look on with envy in the right lane,” he writes.
So let’s discuss this plan. So let’s have that discussion right here: is this a good idea?
