Toss, fling, tank, repeat?

You buy a Mini because it looks nice and it drives as such. Good reasons, we wouldn’t want to change that. Yet today we do not look at the driving pleasure, but rather at the practical consumption of the Mini Cooper that has been delivered since 2014. Is the 1.5-liter three-cylinder a drinking organ or does a small sip already provide a big party?
Fortunately, we are not alone with this question. 23 owners of a Mini Cooper keep track of their consumption in the AutoWeek Consumption Monitor, so that we can form a good picture. In this article we count the three-door, five-door and convertible. If we would also include the Clubman, Countryman and Cooper S’s, 38 Mini owners would even enter their fuel coupons. Driving pleasure and awareness can therefore go hand in hand.
The most economical Cooper
The most economical driver has been tracking consumption since May 2019. Over the past 51,312 km, the Mini consumed a liter of petrol every 17.8 kilometers, which corresponds to 5.6 l/100 km. The factory promises a consumption of 4.5 liters per 100 kilometers for this car, a deviation of 24.9 percent. Mind you, this is the most economical Mini in the AutoWeek Consumption Monitor.
The most wasteful Mini Cooper is a five-door from 2018. The owner of the gray copy notes a consumption of 1 to 13.2 over the past 19,931 kilometers. Deviation from the factory specification? 57.9 percent. Please! Of course, the five-door variant is slightly larger and heavier, on the other hand, the second most economical Cooper (1 in 17.4) in the Consumption Monitor also has five doors.
Average consumption Mini Cooper
Driving style and driving conditions have a major impact on consumption, especially with a fun-oriented car like the Mini, you expect to see this reflected in consumption. The question is therefore what an ‘average’ driving style is for this type of car. Comparable to drivers of a Volkswagen Polo, who record 1 to 18.2? Or more with owners of the somewhat sportier Ford Fiesta, who score 1 in 16.4? Anyway, when we throw all the values from the Consumption Monitor together and draw an average, a value of 1 in 15.4 appears. The price you pay for fun?
