On the road to 2025

Volkswagen’s electric range is starting to grow nicely, but the brand still does not have an electric compact crossover. We are working on that. In these photos you can see a Volkswagen ID2 dressed as ID3!
Volkswagen already sells the ID3, ID4, ID5 and ID Buzz in Europe and an electric sedan will soon be added: the ID7. Volkswagen has also set its sights on the segment of compact electric crossovers. For example, it will eventually come with an electric model under the ID3, a car that may be called ID2. The testing work with the technology of that Volkswagen ID2 is now in full swing!

“But wait a minute, this is just an ID3, isn’t it?” – we hear you think. Nothing is less true. Volkswagen has folded the body of the ID3 around the technology of the ID2. The body of the ID3 therefore serves here purely as the packaging of the ID2 technology. We are therefore dealing with a so-called mule. If you look at the photos a little longer, you will undoubtedly see that Volkswagen has shortened the ID3 considerably to make it fit.

The Volkswagen ID Life whose design ended up in the trash.
In 2021, Volkswagen showed the ID Life Concept at the IAA, a preview of a compact EV with a striking minimalist design. The design of that concept car would have fallen out of favor with management in Wolfsburg, so the ID2 will probably look very different. How exactly, that is still unknown. We do know something about the technology. For example, the Volkswagen ID2 will be placed on a shortened version of the MEB platform that will be called MEB Short.

Initially, Volkswagen called out that the compact electric newcomer will have a starting price of between €20,000 and €25,000. Whether that will succeed, of course, remains to be seen. The Volkswagen ID2 will be joined by two sister models within the Volkswagen Group. For example, Cupra comes with the UrbanRebel technically related to the ID2 and Skoda also has a compact EV in the pipeline. Seat has been designated to produce the electric trio in Spain by 2025. Every year it must be no less than 500,000 copies.
