‘A lot of uncertainty about what is insured with a rental car’

No, fines are not covered

‘A lot of uncertainty about what is insured with a rental car’

It is not clear to many car renters what is and is not covered by the insurance. This is evident from research commissioned by rental company Sunny Cars. Some even think you are covered against traffic fines.

If you rent a car at a holiday destination, you naturally want nothing more than to return the car at the end without any problems. Unfortunately, things can also go wrong on holiday and it would be nice if this could easily be resolved with insurance. Fortunately, that is generally the case, because Sunny Cars emphasizes that rental cars are usually All Risk insured.

“However, the conditions and amounts for which you are insured can differ greatly depending on the country and rental company where you rent the car,” warns the director of Sunny Cars, who likes to emphasize that his company will cover any misery that is not covered by car insurance with an additional Third party insurance covers as much as possible. According to Sunny Cars, research among more than 1,000 Dutch people shows that some people have a very rosy picture of what they are insured for with a rental car. For example, 9 percent say they assume that you are insured against fines with a rental car.

Only 37 percent actually understand the rental agreement. As many as 53 percent do not know that you are insured if you collide with another car. While the latter is always the case with car insurance (whether it is a rental car or not), even with the cheapest form (third party liability). Many wrongly think that you are also insured for a flat tire (46 percent) or an asterisk in the window (65 percent), while that is not the case as standard. According to Sunny Cars, no fewer than two out of three car renters opt for all-in insurance to prevent nasty surprises afterwards.
