30 percent have no alternative

High fuel prices cause financial problems for about a quarter of Dutch motorists. This is apparent from a survey by the ANWB among its members. 30% of motorists have no alternative to the car.
A quarter of motorists in the Netherlands will be financially stuck due to the still sky-high fuel prices, the ANWB reports based on a poll among more than 1,300 members. According to the interest group, this is a representative poll. The poll also shows that almost 60 percent of members leave their car behind more often due to high fuel prices. “Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, fuel prices have risen enormously. This has a major impact on the car use of Dutch people,” according to the ANWB.
There is a small bright spot: fuel prices have been falling for some time now and locally you have lost less than €2 per liter of petrol. Fuel prices are expected to fall further. There is a catch: last April’s excise reduction is currently only valid until the end of this year, according to current planning. The ANWB therefore argues in favor of extending the excise duty reduction to prevent large groups of people from being restricted in their mobility.
No alternative
More than 30 percent of the respondents say they have no alternative to the car to go to work. “This group is hit extra hard by the high petrol prices”, according to the ANWB. For a large group of people, public transport or the (electric) bicycle is not an option because of the much longer travel time.
