Specially developed for EV and Hybrid

A quiet car requires a quiet tire

Cars have become increasingly quieter over the years and with the rise of the electric car (EV, Electric Vehicle), the noise level has only decreased further. The absence of the familiar engine hum puts the emphasis on other sounds, such as wind noise and tire rolling noise. To combat the latter, Hankook developed an extremely quiet tire, the iON evo.

Hankook developed the summer tire iON evo, the iON evo SUV and the winter tire iON i*cept and iON i*cept SUV, in sizes 18 to 22 inches, especially for electric (and hybrid) cars. During the well-attended EV Experience event at the Zandvoort circuit in September this year, many visitors were introduced to Hankook’s silent tire. The iON evo impressed not only with its good grip on wet roads, but especially with the silence inside and outside the car. The environment also benefits from this low-noise tire.

What makes the Hankook iON evo so quiet?

The average consumer does not realize how incredible a lot of knowledge and technology lies behind those apparently simple four pieces of black, round rubber under a car. Hankook’s R&D Center is continuously working on perfecting the car tire. Specifically for the Hankook iON evo, this has resulted in a sophisticated tread with a special mix of materials and a sound-absorbing foam layer on the inside. This resulted in a quiet tire, in and outside the car.

Hankook iON in Formula E

Hankook is the official technical partner and tire supplier of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. Hankook’s technical team works closely with the racing teams & drivers. These experiences are also applied to tires for passenger cars, including the iON evo (SUV) and iON i*cept (SUV). Such a sustainable way of racing also requires a sustainable way of dealing with raw materials. That is why all Formula E tires are completely recycled.

Unbelievably good: the Hankook iON evo

What makes the Hankook iON evo extra suitable for an EV (or heavier Hybrid)?

  1. Sophisticated tread for less noise

The profile of the Hankook iON evo not only ensures optimal drainage of water and dirt, but also minimizes rolling and air resistance and – together with the foam layer inside – noise production.

  2. Tread material with natural resin

To reduce rolling resistance and maintain optimal grip, Hankook developed a new rubber compound for the tire tread. The natural resin and oils used make the iON evo extra durable.

  3. Greater load-bearing capacity, less deformation

The batteries make an EV (or Hybrid) vehicle heavier than an average car. This requires a tire with an extra strong construction, so that less deformation occurs, which also reduces rolling resistance. The Hankook iON evo excels in this area.

Sustainable production, EVolution

Hankook received the ‘S&P Global Gold Class’ award and ranks in the top one percent of EcoVadis sustainability ratings, even more reason to choose the iON series as a tire for an EV. The development of tires at Hankook keeps pace with the development of the vehicle fleet, which has already been reflected in tires specially optimized for electromobility in recent years for Audi, BMW, Hyundai, Porsche and Tesla, among others. The Hankook iON evo takes the next step. There is not only a summer tire, the iON i*cept completes the range as a winter tire.
