In August, 27,825 new passenger cars were registered in the Netherlands. How many of them had an electric drivetrain? And how much a petrol engine? And of which EV were the most units registered? AutoWeek delved into the figures.
Of the almost 28,000 new passenger cars registered in our country in August, 9,174 had a fully electric drivetrain. This means that a third of all newly registered passenger cars in that month were EVs. This means that electric cars account for the most registrations after cars with a hybrid drivetrain. In August, 10,316 hybrid cars were registered, accounting for a 37 percent share of the registration figures.
Are non-hybrid petrol cars still active on the Dutch market? Definitely. In August, 7,857 new passenger cars with a non-hybrid (at most mild-hybrid) petrol engine were registered. So still more than 28 percent of the total. The registration of new diesel cars is at its proverbial end. Last month, only 293 new diesels were registered, good for a share of only one percent. There are also 185 new cars registered that use LPG. These are undoubtedly Dacia’s Sandero.

Most popular electric cars (August 2023)
The Tesla Model Y was the car with the most new units registered in August, so it is not surprising that it also claims the title of ‘most registered EV of August’. 1,228 new Models Y were registered in August. A Tesla is also in second place in the EV rankings. That is of course not a Model S or Model X, but the Model 3 (750 units). The electric variant of the Kia Niro – the Niro EV – is in third place with 524 registrations. The rest of the top 10 consists of invariably popular EVs such as the Peugeot 208, Skoda Enyaq iV, BMW IX1, MG4, Volkswagen ID3, Volkswagen ID4 and Kia EV6. The Renault Megane E-Tech Electric and the Opel Corsa Electric fall just outside the Top 10.
How are the young Chinese brands doing in the Netherlands? Not fantastic. After the Polestar 2 (14th place), MG4 and MG ZS (31st place), the next Chinese brand in the EV rankings is the Xpeng P7. It is in 42nd place with 37 registrations. The BYD Atto 3 follows with 35 registrations in 44th place. The Aiways U5 claims position 55 with 18 registered units. The MG 5 is in 57th place with 13 registrations, together with the Nio ET7 and Smart. #1. Furthermore, there are 12 Nio’s ET5, 8 Hongqi’s E-HS9, 5 MG’s Marvel R and one copy of each BYD Han and Tang. Also interesting: two copies of the Lotus Eletre and two Lucids Air have been registered.
