ACEA calls on governments to provide financial support to the car industry

The European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) is deeply concerned about the European automobile industry. The interest group of European car manufacturers calls on governments to provide financial support to the car industry as soon as possible.

“This is clearly the biggest crisis the auto industry has ever hit.” These are the words of Eric-Mark Huitema, director-general of the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA). Huitema says that he is deeply concerned about the European car industry, as dozens of car manufacturers’ factories have had to close their doors to prevent further spread of the corona virus. Not only have car manufacturers temporarily closed production facilities, suppliers and dealer (s) have also abandoned their activities en masse.

Huitema calls on governments to provide financial support to car manufacturers, suppliers and car dealers as soon as possible. “Now that virtually all production has been shut down and the retail network is also almost flat, the jobs of 14 million Europeans are at stake”. Huitema and ACEA not only believe that local and national governments should provide aid, they also look to the European Union. “Decisions must be taken by the European Commission to prevent irreversible fundamental damage to the sector. In addition, Brussels must prepare for measures to accelerate the recovery of the sector. This also plays a major role in the recovery of the entire European economy. , “said Huitema. Furthermore, according to ACEA, it is important that the production of parts for maintenance continues and that service points also remain open.

According to ACEA, 229 production sites are located within the European Union where cars are produced or assembled, locations that employ a total of 2.6 million people. The entire sector, including dealer networks and suppliers, would account for 13.8 million employees. “The health of these individuals, who are the backbone of our industry, is paramount for car manufacturers.”
