Oops, an orange light on your dashboard. That means something is wrong. In order to determine exactly what is wrong with your car, a diagnosis must be made.
All cars have numerous warning lights, most of them red or orange. If a red lamp lights up, you have to stop immediately. That is obvious. But this time we’re talking about the orange lights. If they are on, you can still drive to a garage, unless the light flashes. Then you also have to stop immediately. But usually such an orange light with a fairly common symbol lights up, so you don’t know exactly what is going on. In fact, there can be a thousand different ‘error codes’ hidden behind the same light. The diagnosis must therefore still be made by a garage.
Error code
Henk van Hoef of Bosch Car Service explains: “There is more to a diagnosis than just reading the error codes. I use the diagnostic device to read the car, and if I then have an error code, I have to gather more information about it and, if necessary, do further research to determine exactly what is wrong. ” He shows how this works on the basis of a gray Volkswagen. The light with the engine block symbol illuminates. The connected test device indicates that there is something wrong with the cooling fan, especially with the power supply. But that’s only part of the diagnosis – the cause hasn’t been found yet. Now Henk has to search further. Is the plug properly inserted? Is there a cable break? For example, he works through a step-by-step plan to find out what is wrong with the car. “So you need good tools, information and knowledge to be able to make a diagnosis,” says Henk. “In many cases you cannot ‘just’ determine what the problem is, because you have to check all kinds of other things in addition to reading out. A good diagnosis is very important, because then you as a consumer know where you stand. “
