Guangzhou Automobile Group, better known as GAC, founded a new brand that goes by the name of Aion. In the same year, the new division immediately launched its first-born: the Aion S. That electric sedan joined last year by a 4.6 meter long SUV, the Aion V. GAC is now expanding with the smaller but on paper just as interesting Aion Y.

The Aion Y has a playful design and in these photos at least cheerfully colored electric crossover that with its length of 4.41 meters is comparable to the Volvo XC40, although the wheelbase of this Chinese SUV with 2.75 meters is suit it bit 5 centimeters longer. The Aion Y customer can choose from three different battery packs. The smallest of the bunch has a capacity of 60 kWh, good for a range of 410 kilometers. Above that is a 70 kWh battery that you should be able to use for 500 kilometers in the Aion Y. The top version has an 80 kWh battery in its bottom. According to GAC, this version should be able to achieve a range of 600 kilometers. Please note, these are all NEDC values that are much less accurate than those determined by the WLTP method applicable in Europe. The Aion Y with a 60 kWh battery has a 136 hp electric motor. The two versions with 70 kWh and 80 kWh of electric lung capacity have a 184 hp and 225 Nm strong unit.

Inside, the Aion Y is typically a child of its time, which means that it has a relatively minimalist interior with a large multimedia screen and digital instruments. The central screen has a diameter of no less than 14.5 inches and is surprisingly not oriented vertically, but horizontally. The Aion Y has 5G connectivity, can operate semi-autonomously, according to its creators, and is able to scan the face of its occupants and then adjust certain settings accordingly. The basic version with a 60 kWh battery has a starting price of only € 14,400 in China. For the second and third variants you will successively pay € 15,650 and € 19,600.

GAC has no plans yet to sell its goods in Europe. Chinese brands such as MG, Aiways and Seres already sell electric models in our part of the world and more will follow soon. Not only Hongqi, but also BYD and Xpeng wants to sell cars here. Would the friendly-priced Aion Y, provided it meets European safety requirements, be a welcome addition to the Dutch EV offer?
