AirPods will check people’s breathing

The wearables branch of Apple, which includes AirPods earbuds and Apple Watches, is becoming increasingly important. Not only in terms of turnover, but also in terms of functions. The American company mainly sees a future in the health industry.

Apple is now working on a method to monitor people’s breathing via AirPods. In collaboration with the American Cornell University, the iPhone maker is currently working on a small-scale study among 21 people to detect respiratory problems at an early stage. The website discovered that MyHealthyApple.

The microphones of the AirPods are used to monitor how intensively someone is breathing. This information is then used to ‘train’ a self-learning model. Ultimately, this model is intended to be able to recognize the difference between normal and non-normal breathing. Abnormal breathing can indicate a wide range of health problems.

Participants were asked to record short audio clips before, during and after exercise. They also wore an Apple Watch to measure the heart rate.

Why Apple chooses AirPods

Why Apple uses AirPods to check breathing? Because of the comfort and ease of use. Many people do not find it annoying to wear the earplugs.

In the study, Apple admits that special equipment provides more reliable results, of course, but there are all kinds of drawbacks to this. For example, it is not nice to walk around with all kinds of extra sensors.

It is still unclear what the next steps are. This may be a one-off study. It is also possible that Apple will process the results in subsequent AirPods (or other devices).
