Aiways U6 in pictures

Aiways, now also known in the Netherlands, is showing its second model, the Aiways U6. As an electric coupé-SUV, it puts a tick in every fashionable box.

Aiways shows the U6, but hastens to mention that it is still a ‘preview’. That may explain why we cannot admire the car from behind yet.

Still, the Aiways U6 looks quite ready for production, especially compared to the U6 Ion Concept that preceded it last year. That is necessary, because this U6 should appear on the market in China and in Europe later this year, as the second model worldwide from EV builder Aiways.

The Aiways U6 shares its More Adaptable Structure (MAS) platform with the U5 and no doubt borrows its powertrain as well. Yet it is more than a U5 with a sloping roofline, a brief look at the photos shows. The closed front is recognizable, but the L-shaped lamps are clearly different from the horizontal ones of the already well-known model. The front bumper also looks sportier, thanks to a fairly large air intake at the bottom with a tough mesh pattern.

Charging port will be relocated

From the side, it is striking that the glass section stops on the back door. So there is no extra window in the rear window pillar, as is usual even with ‘coupĂ©-SUVs’. The wheel arches are slightly flattened at the top and the rear seems to get L-shaped light units, just like the front. The black scuff plate, which shows where the battery pack is located, is given four striking body-colored stripes. Also striking: the U6 carries its loading port above the front wheel arch, while the tailgate on the U5 is in the front bumper.

Float

The interior is also clearly different from what we know of the U5. Instead of a triptych of screens, we now only find a small ‘letterbox’ behind the wheel, while the central touchscreen is larger here. Just like a Tesla Model 3, it seems to float slightly in front of the dashboard. The two-spoke steering wheel also stands out, as does the special control lever for the direction of travel. The U5 has a rotary knob for this, the U6 a lever that reminds us amateurs most of the throttle on an airplane.

If Aiways indeed wants to introduce this car this year, we will undoubtedly get to see more of this Aiways U6 very soon.
