‘Alfa Romeo considers Tonale Quadrifoglio, possibly electric’

Alfa Romeo presented the long-awaited Tonale yesterday: a compact SUV that will initially only be marketed in the Netherlands as a mild and plug-in hybrid. However, the management in Milan is also considering other variants, which can go in several directions.

Daniel Tiago Guzzafame, ‘global product manager’, at Alfa Romeo, tells the Australian Drive.com that the brand is currently exploring the possibilities for additional versions of the Tonale. He also suggests that Alfa Romeo is considering a fully electric variant of the Tonale. According to him, the platform is suitable for that. “If there is a demand for it in this vehicle category, we will certainly introduce an all-electric model,” said Guzzafame. “When we enter the electrical world, it will be with something relevant,” he continues. “Whether that is the case for the Tonale will be determined by the market. But of course the brand’s strategy is moving in that direction.”

Given the popularity of the electric Volvo XC40 P8, Audi Q4 e-tron and Mercedes-Benz EQA, a Tonale with electric drive does not seem a superfluous luxury. At the other end of the spectrum, Guzzafame hints that Alfa Romeo is toying with the idea of introducing a Tonale Quadrifoglio. He is still vague about that. “We have a few alternatives, both combustion engine and electrification. We want it to match the Quadrifoglio decal on the side, but it also has to match the market.” When asked whether that Tonale Quadrifoglio will be pure electric, hybrid or neither, he dodges the question with the following statement: “Where we are going is what we have said before: the future of Alfa Romeo is electric.”

The possible Tonale Quadrifoglio therefore remains shrouded in mystery for the time being. In any case, there is still plenty in the barrel at Alfa Romeo in the coming years. Until 2026, the brand reportedly wants to introduce a new model every year, a significant break from the radio silence of recent years. The next model will most likely be the Brennero next year, an SUV that will come under the Tonale and also come on the market as a fully electric version. Whether a possible electric Tonale will be earlier than that Brennero, remains to be seen.
