The Alfa Romeo Giulia and Alfa Romeo Stelvio will receive an extensive facelift in the foreseeable future, following the example of the all-new Tonale. In addition to a taut front and butt, electrification will soon be waiting for the Giorgio brothers, albeit limited.
According to Alfa, the Alfa Romeo Tonale means a true ‘Metamorphosis’ for the brand, which wants to introduce a new car every year from this model. There is a good chance that it will be a heavily facelifted Giulia and Stelvio in the coming years. The Tonale introduces a new, tighter drawing style for Alfa Romeo, but also electrification. Add to that the fact that the new Giulia is still a bit late, and you know that a facelift is inevitable.
Hybrid
Alfa Romeo also hinted during the presentation of the Tonale opposite AutoWeek that the two larger models will still get hybrid technology on board. That is remarkable, because the rear-wheel drive Giorgio platform on which the cars stand is being pushed aside because it would not be suitable for electrification. However, this mainly concerns large-scale electrification, so in the form of a plug-in hybrid or EV. However, a (mild) hybrid aid, such as the 48V system in the Maserati Levante or the non-plug versions of the Tonale, is possible. That is good news for Dutch enthusiasts, for whom an Alfa Romeo with lower CO2 emissions can also mean a lower price.
design
It is clear that the appearance of the Giulia and the Stelvio could use an update. These models are among the very last new cars with xenon lighting, a technology that has been replaced by LED almost everywhere. The Giulia is even available with halogen binoculars, which are completely obsolete in this class.
The design of the cars may still be there in our opinion, but it is clearly different from the drawing style of the Tonale. The Giulia and Stelvio adopt its sleeker headlamps linked to the Scudetto grille, including the three elements per side that make up Alfa’s new light signature. Don’t worry: the new front will be integrated in a slightly nicer way than in the image above. Also at the back we expect to encounter the six ‘half laps’ on the duo. Perhaps they even expel the license plate to the bumper on the Giulia, so that there is more space for the almost mandatory light bar.
The Alfa Romeo Giulia dates from 2015, the Stelvio from 2016. Since then, there have been updates, but no major changes in appearance.
