It had been a long time coming, but now it is a fact: Alfa Romeo no longer builds the Giulietta. The (indirect) successor will be delayed for the time being.
Almost a year ago we heard that Alfa Romeo would soon pull the plug from the production of the Giulietta. The now more than ten-year-old compact mid-sized car has survived for a long time despite the sales figures plunged almost to zero. The latest new Giulietta is according to, among others Alfa Club Italia left the band in Italy on December 22. That while at the beginning of this year spring was still designated as the end station for the Giulietta. The halt in total car production last spring probably played a role in the extension.
Last year Alfa Romeo sold just under 16,000 Giuliettas. A year earlier there were 10,000 more and the peak year was 2012, when over 60,000 were sold. In the Netherlands a total of more than 11,000 Giuliettas have been sold. 2011 was the best year here with 2,481 units, after which it deteriorated rapidly. After 2012, it did not exceed 1,000 units on an annual basis and this year the counter is at 32 units.
Although Alfa Romeo has been able to postpone the end of the Giulietta quite a bit, it still has no successor ready. Nevertheless, it has now become clear that we can expect this in the form of the Tonale. An SUV that competes with cars like the Nissan Qashqai and Kia Sportage. The Tonale will share its technology with FCA sister brand Jeep according to the latest concrete plans and will in any case be marketed as a plug-in hybrid. The long-awaited reveal will hopefully finally take place in 2021. Previously, it was rumored that it might already happen this year, but that kite did not work.
