Alfa Romeo pushes its own platform aside

Alfa Romeo will not continue with the Giorgio platform that the brand currently uses for the Stelvio and the Giulia. CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato says future larger Alfa Romeo models will use Stellantis’ electric ‘STLA Large’ platform currently under development. For models with only a fuel engine, there is no longer room for the brand.

Currently, the Giulia and Stelvio are the only two models sold by Alfa Romeo. The Giorgio platform, which is available in both a rear-wheel and all-wheel drive configuration, was created specifically for these models. The Maserati Grecale SUV, which will appear later this year, will also use the chassis. After that, it will be ready for the Giorgio platform, CEO Imparato said Automotive News in an online meeting with Italian media. In the future, the larger Alfas will be placed on Stellantis’ ‘STLA Large’ platform, which is currently still under development. Electrification also plays a prominent role in Alfa Romeo’s future: all new models are fully electric or plug-in hybrid. “If you don’t electrify, you’re dead,” said Imparato.

Alfa Romeo’s own platform is therefore a thing of the past. The first new model that Alfa has planned, the Tonale, uses the technical basis of the Jeep Compass, among others. The Tonale was supposed to be in showrooms at the beginning of 2022, but the market introduction is heading for postponement because Imparato would not find the performance of the 240 hp Jeep plug-in hybrid powertrain sufficient for Alfa Romeo. The CEO confirms in the same meeting that the introduction of the Tonale is indeed delayed by three months. He did not reveal further details about this, but the unveiling is now scheduled for June 4, 2022.

Brennero

The first Alfa Romeo on a platform of the former PSA is said to be called Brennero, a compact SUV that will be placed under the Tonale. Imparato confirmed that the model will be built in Tychy, Poland, but did not provide further details on the format or the planned date of the unveiling. The plant in Poland is currently being converted to produce compact models on the e-CMP platform. Alfa Romeo is said to only pull the curtain off the Brennero in 2023.
