The French government wants all larger parking areas to be covered with solar panels. This not only concerns new parking areas, but also existing ones.
In France, parking lots that can accommodate at least 80 cars must be covered with solar panels. That dictates new legislation approved by the French Senate, Electrek reports.
With effect from 1 July 2023, operators of car parks with between 80 and 400 spaces will have five years to cover the site with solar panels. Parking lots that have more than 400 parking spaces will have to comply with the new legislation sooner. From 1 July next year, these larger parking areas will have to get three years to get things in order. At least half of the site must then be covered with solar cells.
The new law is the result of the French government’s intention to increase the production of solar energy tenfold.
