Almost new ‘side code’ for Dutch license plates: the Z is a fact

The license plate series with the current ‘sidecode’ is one step closer to its end, because after the X it is now the turn of the Z as the initial letter. This means that a new classification of the Dutch car license plate will arrive in a few months.

The transition from the X to the Z is a much less exclusive party than the previous transition between the T and the Yes: X-999-ZZ is an Ignis and so is Z-001-BB.

At the beginning of October we announced the license plates starting with an ‘X’ at this location, so within about five months at most the ‘Z’ will also be used up. Perhaps even sooner, because the RDW has a good habit of making the arrival of a new license plate series as unpredictable as possible, so that buyers do not have to wait for it. That new series is of course discussed after the last letter of the alphabet. The entire series with the arrangement ‘X-999-XX’, also known as ‘Sidecode 10’, will then be used up. ‘Sidecode 11’ is already known in the world of commercial vehicles and will also appear on passenger cars later this year. This means that a series of license plates with the format ‘XXX-99-X’ will be completed. It is theoretically possible that this license plate series will be alternated with personal license plates for the first time, because there appears to be a parliamentary majority in favor of this.

‘Sidecode 11’ has been on commercial vehicles for some time. Soon also on passenger cars, although not with the initial ‘V’.
