Opel will launch a fully electric version of the Opel Astra in 2023. That Astra-e does not only come as a hatchback, but also as a fully electric Sports Tourer!
The MG 5 Electric is currently a special model, as it is the only relatively affordable electric station wagon in Europe. But MG does not retain the exclusive right to serve the European customer of an electric station for long. Opel will introduce a fully electric Astra-e in 2023 and the Sports Tourer station variant will also come with an all-electric powertrain. That says Opel in front of AutoWeek.
Technical specifications of the electric Astra-e Sports Tourer are not yet available. Before Opel announced the arrival of the electric Sports Tourer, it was not inconceivable that Opel would follow a similar path with the Astra-e as Renault with the Mégane E-Tech Electric. In 2023 – the year in which the Astra-e is to be launched on the market – Opel’s parent company Stellantis will also introduce the eVMP platform. This is a modular EV base that is suitable for cars in the C and D segment and can accommodate battery packs with a capacity of 60 to 100 kWh. That idea is off the table. Opel definitely does not seem to make any of the regular Astra disconnected and Mégane E-Tech Electric-like separate model and therefore just squeezes a battery pack into the bottom of the still brand new sixth generation Astra (K).
How big is the battery pack that the Opel Astra-e gets? That is currently unknown. We do know that you will not only see the powertrain of the electric Astra-e and Astra-e Sports Tourer at Opel. The current Astra is the technical brother of both the DS 4 and Peugeot 308, and electric versions are also available. Just like the Astra, there is a station version of the Peugeot 308. Don’t be surprised if there is also a Peugeot e-308 SW.
Opel plans to sell only electric cars from 2028. In that respect, the Astra-e and Astra-e Sports Tourer are more than welcome.
