The now famous JD Power is researching all kinds of motorists’ experiences with their cars in the US. Research has now also been conducted into experiences with new technologies. Volvo and Tesla score best in that area this year.
We already know JD Power from research into the quality perception and reliability of young cars. In the US, it records how often owners encounter problems per brand and then a ranking is produced. For example, this year Genesis emerged as the best quality brand for three-year-old cars and Kia was the most reliable brand for brand new cars. However, JD Power also looks specifically at how owners experience new technologies in their cars. Think of things like semi-autonomous driving, cameras, safety systems and the operation of the infotainment system. Owners must give a score to various things and indicate to what extent there are problems with or the operation is disappointing.
In this year’s survey Volvo comes out best with new cars in the tech field. In second place is BMW, followed by Cadillac, Mercedes-Benz and Genesis. Acura, Honda, Jeep, Porsche and Mini close the list at the bottom, with Mini in last place. Where is Tesla, you may ask. Tesla is actually back in second place, just behind Volvo in terms of score. The problem, however, is that Tesla JD Power does not approve the study in all states and so the score is kept out of the top list.
(Im) popular business
According to JD Power, owners are especially pleased with cameras in new cars that give them ‘an extra set of eyes’. Think of reversing cameras, blind spot cameras and parking cameras. The majority of the owners indicate that they will undoubtedly tick such things again on the order list of their next car. Something that is totally unappreciated is gesture control. Operating the infotainment screen without touching it. According to most, this generally works poorly, regardless of which brand it uses. There is also still a lot of mistrust about technology for (semi-) autonomous driving.
