Google has announced Android TV 12, the new version of its operating system for smart televisions. Your TV won’t get the upgrade until next year at the earliest, but that doesn’t change the fact that there are many powerful improvements. We list the most important things.
Android TV 12
Last year, in September, Google launched Android TV 11, but this time we had to be more patient for the improvements of the new Android TV 12 that will also work on devices with Google TV. Google is now announcing everything about the new version on its developer site.
Before we look at all the interesting improvements, let’s start with the bad news: you can’t download the update yet. For the time being, only developers can get started with the software and it is not yet known when the first televisions will receive the update. We suspect that this will be the case in the course of 2022. Currently, app makers are optimizing their software for the new version.
5 main improvements
Precisely because updates take longer, Google traditionally knows how to make fewer people warm with Android TV updates. And yet with Android TV 12 there are nice novelties that will improve your TV experience sooner or later. We summarize the main points below:
- Nicer interface: The interface is now displayed in 4K. In addition, we see a new design for menus with blurred backgrounds.
- Play media: Better support for TV screen modes, and improved support for HDR and surround formats. The quality of media played is also more consistent because your TV can adjust the refresh rate if needed.
- Accessibility: you can now adjust the font size.
- Privacy: Android TV 12 offers support for the camera and microphone indicators of Android 12. There will also be buttons with which you can turn off the camera and microphone in one fell swoop.
- HDMI: HDMI CEC 2.0 technology is supported. This allows you to control other HDMI devices with your Android TV and its remote control. HDMI standards are also better supported.
