Google has proposed the stable version of Android 12L. The update aims to ensure that Android devices make better use of extra screen space. That is why it is particularly interesting for tablets and foldable phones. You can already install the update on Pixel devices and later it will also be available on tablets and foldables.
Android 12L available
In October, Google introduced Android 12L. An addition to Android 12 that completely changes the interface on larger screens. It should make Android more suitable for tablets and foldables, similar to the success the custom iPadOS has had for Apple. Google hopes to catch up with Android 12L.
The stable update is now available for Pixel phones, Google announces in a blog post† You’ll see the update on the Pixel 3a, Pixel 3a XL, Pixel 4, Pixel 4 XL, Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a 5G, Pixel 5, and Pixel 5a in the near future. If you have a Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro, you can expect the update later this month.
What’s new in Android 12L?
With a larger screen it is only logical that you also get to see more information. Google has followed that philosophy in the interface of Android. As an example, Google shows us the new screen for your notifications and quick settings on tablets. Why swipe down twice to see the quick settings when there’s enough space to show the buttons on the left.
In addition, the settings of Android 12L will also look a lot better on tablets and foldables, because by default there will be a display in two columns. On the left you see the list with all settings, while on the right you immediately make adjustments.
Also new is a taskbar that is strongly reminiscent of Chrome OS. The intention is to make working on tablets more productive and you can now drag apps from the taskbar onto the screen to multitask. You can see exactly how that works in the gif below.
What’s New for Phones?
However, the Android 12L update is not only interesting for owners of tablets or foldable smartphones. Google has also rolled out a series of improvements that are useful on phones as well. These are features that may not have been completed in time with the stable version of Android 12. They are minor improvements to the interface and six features that we discuss in the article below.
