An anti aging serum is said to rejuvenate the skin and reduce wrinkles. We explain the beauty trend to you and reveal whether the serums are working – and also what your skin really needs.
Serums are comparatively thin cosmetic products that have very high concentrations of active ingredients. Both properties are intended to ensure that the active ingredients can penetrate the skin particularly well. There are serums for various purposes – including anti-aging. An anti-aging serum is particularly intended to stimulate the renewal of the skin and the production of collagen. Collagen is a protein that occurs in connective tissue and binds moisture there. With age, collagen is increasingly broken down and the body can no longer produce as much of it. This slackens the skin.
What ingredients does an anti-aging serum contain?
Anti-aging serums differ depending on the product. However, there are some typical ingredients:
- Retinol: Retinol is a form of vitamin A that plays an important role in the skin. The body can make retinol from dietary vitamin A, but it doesn’t work as well as you get older. Various studies show that skin care products containing retinol work. Among other things, has one study with 36 participants showed that skin care products with retinol can reduce wrinkles. Another study found that retinol can partially repair damage to the skin caused by UV light. However, retinol is irritating to the skin and in Germany it may therefore contain a maximum of 0.3 percent in skin care products. In addition, retinol is not always vegan and the body used get on with it over time. The herbal active ingredient Bakuchiol could be an alternative. He applies as skin-friendly and should have a similar effect. However, far fewer studies exist on Bakuchiol than on retinol.
- Hyaluronic acid: Hyaluronic acid is an important store of moisture in connective tissue. Studies show, among other things, that hyaluronic acid makes the skin more moist and elastic. In particular, small hyaluronic acid molecules should be able to penetrate the skin and reduce the depth of wrinkles there.
Applying anti-aging serum: Here’s how
Since an anti-aging serum is very concentrated, you only need several drops per application. How to use it:
- Thoroughly clean your face and hands.
- Spread a few drops of the antiaging serum in the palms of your hands and press them onto the skin of your face. Alternatively, you can put a drop of the serum on each chin, cheek, nose and forehead and massage in with your fingers.
- Let the serum soak in for about ten minutes.
- Wear another if necessary Moisturizer on.
Note: If in doubt, always follow the recommendations on the products.
Anti Aging Serum: Does It Work?
Recently has Ökotest examines various anti-aging serums. It turned out that both expensive and cheap products work – but they cannot rejuvenate the skin. According to Ökotest, the active ingredients penetrate the skin, but only into the top layer (the epidermis). However, aging processes mainly take place in the underlying dermis. If the active ingredients were to get there, the anti-aging serums would have to be sold as medicinal products.
“Very good” could therefore only cut products that did not make exaggerated promises of salvation. Manufacturers are allowed to advertise that their anti-aging serum moisturizes the skin and makes it look fresher and smoother. Such effects can be scientifically proven, such as this one study shows. However, Ökotest deducted points when companies advertised anti-aging effects.
In addition, the products from L’Oréal and Vichy failed because they contain questionable ingredients.
Tip: We recommend certified natural cosmeticsto avoid questionable ingredients.
Anti-aging serum: do you need it?
Aside from the effect: do you even need an antiaging serum? Advertisements often suggest that age must be fought with various products. It is completely natural for the skin to sag and wrinkle over time. You shouldn’t buy products to meet an ideal of beauty. Only buy them if you really feel better about them. For example, if your skin is uncomfortably dry, an antiaging serum may help. A normal moisturizer is sufficient.
