ANWB calls for a reduction in excise duty on fuel

The ever-increasing fuel prices are causing more and more commotion. Now ANWB top woman Marga de Jager is also speaking out. The ANWB argues for a reduction in excise duty and a VAT-free part of the liter price.

With an Average National Retail Price of €2.50 per liter of E10, there is another record on Thursday and the increase seems to continue. That’s such a big difference from what’s usually become for fuel, that it’s taking a big blow to the purchasing power of many. In Belgium, the government is therefore already considering tax relief. The Netherlands should do the same, says De Jager. RTL News notes that De Jager has sent a letter to Sigrid Kaag (D66), the Minister of Finance, in which she calls for a reduction in excise duty and a VAT-free rate.

De Jager emphasizes that the Netherlands is the frontrunner in the EU with €0.83 excise duty per liter. The minimum agreed in the EU is just under €0.36, so there is still quite a bit of leeway there. Moreover, according to the ANWB, VAT should be frozen for the part of the liter price above €1.711. This is a response to a survey by the ANWB among its members, of which almost a third now indicate that they are experiencing financial difficulties due to the high petrol prices.
