ANWB: ‘This summer most breakdowns in 15 years’

Last summer, the ANWB experienced the busiest summer in the Netherlands in terms of breakdowns in fifteen years. Of course, more Dutch people went on holiday in their own country than usual.

The ANWB received 5 percent more breakdowns in the Netherlands last summer than in the years before the corona crisis. A spokesperson for the organization cannot say how that translates to absolute numbers. The ANWB sees the increased number of holidays in our own country as a result of the corona crisis as the most likely cause of the number of breakdowns. Undoubtedly it also plays a role that many people who would otherwise go on holiday by plane now opt for a car holiday close to home. “It was especially busy in the north and south of the country this summer,” said the spokesperson. “Busier than in the Randstad and all other parts of the country.”

There were mainly reports of cars that would not start and of burning lights on the dashboard. In addition, the ANWB also received many requests for breakdown assistance in the event of loss of engine power, flat tires and battery problems. Although the number of breakdowns continued to rise this summer, the traffic organization never ran into problems with capacity. “We had no major problems. The emergency center and roadside assistance were well staffed at all times.”
