Canada is working hard on its ‘own’ electric car that fully responds to the changing view on mobility. The APMA, a collection of various Canadian automotive agencies, is now presenting a first concept version of that car.
The APMA (Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association) has been the umbrella organization for everything related to the automotive industry in Canada since 1952. Under the leadership of APMA, industrialists, suppliers, engineers and universities are now working on the ‘Canadian car of the near future’. It must bring together the best that Canada has to offer in the automotive field. The project is still in its infancy, but at least an important milestone has now been reached. The design of students from the Carleton University of Industrial Design has been chosen as the winning design. Work will continue on this basis from now on.
We see a fairly compact SUV-like with only four seats for the time being. Outside and inside, the ‘Arrow’ follows today’s minimalist design trend. With a little imagination you can see some Range Rover Evoque inspired lines in it. It is not yet very detailed, but there is a good reason for this. The detail work will only now begin, now that it is certain that this will be the basis. Ultimately, it should lead to a virtual concept car that we will see next year. A physical prototype must be ready in 2022 and the run-up to production begins.
People remain silent about specifications in all keys, from which it can be deduced that the technology is anything but in jugs and creeps. In any case, the focus is on a number of key points of contemporary mobility: autonomous, ‘connected’, electric and sharing. Broadly speaking, we can therefore probably expect a shared car that can largely take over the driving from the driver. This may eventually become the car that you will often encounter in Canadian cities in the long term, as a taxi for example. We will see.
