Apple Watch Series 7 – The best smartwatch, just a little better

Introducing a new model with significant improvements every year is also starting to become a challenge for the Apple Watch. Admittedly, the improvements of the Apple Watch Series 7 compared to the Series 6 are really interesting, but those who already own a Series 6 will find few reasons to upgrade. • Pros
  • Bigger screen
  • Fast Charging
  • Sturdier glass
  • Negatives
  • Little subcutaneous innovation
  • Special wireless charger
  • Pricey

Let’s start with the most striking improvement: the Series 7 has a slightly larger size. From 40mm and 44mm to 41mm and 45mm. As a result, the Series 7 has also become slightly heavier. The advantage is a slightly larger screen which is really nice in practice. It wasn’t necessary, but it was comfortable. To look at then, because with some wrist(s) the Apple Watch can feel just too coarse. Fortunately, all bands for the earlier versions just fit on the new Apple Watch. That would also encounter too much comment from existing users, because official Apple bands are not cheap. In addition to the slightly larger size, the housing is now also completely dustproof according to the IP-6X rating. Water resistant to 50 meters, Apple Watches have been around since the Series 2.

The larger screen offers a more user-friendly interface with larger touch buttons.

Scratch-resistant screen

Personally, I think one of the biggest improvements is the more scratch-resistant screen. At least, I hope it turns out to be so in the long run. Because up to and including the Series 6, the screen was sturdy, but at some point it did get scratches. And due to the design, the glass almost always absorbs a fall and damage is relatively often caused. Relatively much more often than when a phone falls. Replacing the glass/screen is not included with the Apple Watch, you get a new clock for a reduced rate, but that reduced rate is substantial. For the Series 7 that is more than 327 euros, so that is only 102-132 euros difference with a completely new clock where you get a strap of 49 euros. Just calculate the difference and you’ll know never to drop your Apple Watch on the floor.

The Apple Watch Series 7 is available in five different colors.

Faster charging

The battery of the Series 7 has the same capacity as that of the Series 6, but it can now be charged faster. The operating time on a battery charge is still about 18 hours. But the Series 7 can now be charged faster. A wireless charging cable with a USB-C plug is supplied for this. If you always charge your Apple Watch at night, it doesn’t matter. If you also want to keep track of your sleep rhythm at night, charging as short as possible is very important. According to Apple, charging the Series 7 with the faster cord is a third faster than the regular version with a regular USB connection. From empty to 80% charge now takes 45 minutes. Older Apple Watches can be charged with this Magnetic Fast Charger, but according to Apple, this is not faster than with the regular charger.

The Magnetic Fast Charger has a USB-C connection and can charge the Series 7 faster.

Much has remained the same

Furthermore, in terms of hardware specifications, everything has remained the same. Apple calls the processor a dual-core S7 SiP. That seems new compared to the S6 SiP of the Series 6, but in terms of specifications, the Series 6 and 7 are completely the same. So 32GB storage, U1 chip, oximeter, electrical and optical heart rate sensor, altimeter and bluetooth 5.0.

Incidentally, you will not be short of anything because the latest Apple Watch is just nice and fast and goes smoothly through all menus and animations.

Thanks to the larger screen, you can now also tap a mini keyboard. Now only in English, waiting for other languages.

Conclusion

If you already have a Series 6, the latest Apple Watch is only a limited upgrade. Still, you get used to the larger and brighter screen very quickly and the ability to enter something on a qwerty keyboard is fun. Faster charging and a more scratch-resistant screen are also valuable improvements. In short, the Apple Watch has gotten a little better and remains by far the best and most useful smartwatch you can buy.
