New AirPods in 2024
Apple is working on a new generation of AirPods, which are rumored to be released this year. In 2023 we did not see any really new AirPods, Apple only released a new charging case with USB-C port for the AirPods Pro 2. Furthermore, the earphones did not get any new functions, but we can expect new AirPods in 2024. The AirPods 4 are expected to arrive this year.

That’s not all, because the AirPods Max will also finally be renewed in 2024. Apple released the headphones in 2020 and has not made any further changes to the device since. As a result, Apple’s first headphones are now far behind the competition. This year we can expect a new version, but the question remains whether that is the update we are waiting for.
AirPods Max get USB-C
According to rumors, Apple will provide the AirPods Max with a USB-C connection this year. Apple doesn’t have much choice, because European legislation requires companies to add a USB-C port to all new devices from this year. Unfortunately, that is also the only change we will see with the AirPods Max, because there are no new features coming to the headphones.
However, according to the usually reliable Apple analyst Mark Gurman, new colors will be available for the AirPods Max. The device is now available in silver, space gray, sky blue, pink and green. There will probably be a number of new shades this year. So there will be no new features coming to the AirPods Max in 2024, it is unclear whether Apple plans to do so next year.
Major update for AirPods 4
In any case, we can expect a major update with the new AirPods 4 in 2024. The earphones are rumored to have noise cancellation this year, a feature that we previously only saw with the AirPods Pro. You no longer have to pay the premium price for active noise cancellation with Apple earphones. That would be the first time that Apple noise cancelling to the ‘normal’ AirPods.

Furthermore, the fit, sound quality and charging case of the AirPods 4 are also improved. For example, the charging case of the new AirPods will finally have a speaker in 2024 to play a sound via the ‘Find My’ app. The case is also equipped with a USB-C port, so that you will soon only need one cable to charge your iPhone, Mac, iPad and AirPods.

So we can finally expect new AirPods in 2024. Apple usually only releases the earphones at the end of the year, so there is a good chance that we will have to wait a while for the AirPods 4 and the AirPods Max. The AirPods 3 appeared in October 2021, Apple released the AirPods Max in December 2020. It is therefore expected that we will also see the new AirPods in the autumn this year.
