Since its launch many years ago, 2011 to be precise, we have always had a soft spot for the Tuono V4. During a comparison with our Eastern neighbors a few years later with the Tuono V4 1100, enlarged to 1,078 cc, against the KTM 1290 Super Duke R and the BMW S 1000 R, the Tuono turned out to be the sportiest of the trio – the only real ‘supersport-with-‘ wide-handlebar’.
On the other hand, the Tuono was also by far the thirstiest of the trio. So thirsty that at some point we started to break out in a sweat when a trip meter reading of barely 130 kilometers showed that the gas station on route was closed, and eventually we just made it to the next station with our buttocks clenched on the last drops of gasoline. A few years later, Aprilia announced a huge update here: not by reducing fuel consumption by 1 in 9, but by increasing the fuel tank.
That the Tuono V4 1100 was really the very best Hypernaked for the street was confirmed by Australian Rennie Scaysbrook, who won the 2019 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb with a Tuono V4 1100 Factory. However, the 2019 edition of the illustrious mountain climb was overshadowed by the death of multiple winner Carlin Dunne, after which the organization decided to cancel the engine section, making the first and last victory for Aprilia.
Well, that said, Aprilia has thoroughly overhauled the Tuono V4 for 2025 (the figure 1100 has been dropped again since 2021). Starting with the block, the cylinder capacity of which has been increased to 1,099 cc by increasing the stroke by a few tenths of a millimeter. An adjustment that the Italians had already made to the RSV4 in 2021, at the time in view of the amended regulations of the Italian Superbike Championship, which allowed four-cylinder engines up to 1,100 cc.
The latest generation 65° V-twin features larger 52mm ride-by-wire throttle bodies and is now specified for a top power of 180 hp at 11,800 rpm and maximum torque of 121 Nm at 9,600 rpm. That may be small compared to the 200+ hp performance of the Streetfighter V4 and M 1000 R, but trust us: you won’t be short of anything. Aprilia once again emphasizes that the new engine also meets the new (and stricter) Euro 5+ standard.
Most striking, however, is the new nose, which now features two overlapping winglets, inspired by Aprilia’s experience in MotoGP and developed in the wind tunnel. According to Aprilia, the new winglets should have provided better road holding and therefore more precise cornering.
In addition, the new design helps improve heat dissipation thanks to the inclusion of more powerful radiator fans and increases rider comfort by directing warm airflows away from the legs.
The design of the side panels is also new; they are now better integrated with the styling of the new rear. The rear light design is lighter and simpler and is integrated into the license plate holder; all lighting functions are performed by the direction indicators. The set-up of the new Aprilia Tuono V4 models includes the lightweight lithium battery, the TFT 5” color instrument panel with new graphics and illuminated electric control panels on the handlebars.
As far as the bicycle part is concerned, we can be brief: the only thing Aprilia reports is that the aluminum dual-beam frame is now available in matte black for the very first time, from which it can be concluded that no adjustments have been made other than that color. Not on the frame and not on the suspension.
However, this does not apply to electronics. In fact, Aprilia even speaks of a new chapter that has begun when it comes to the electronics on board the Tuono. A new generation of systems that can also be purchased as “in-app purchases” and so a visit to the dealer is not necessary.
For the first time, Aprilia has introduced a series of electronics packages that represent the optimal combination of performance and safety, adding several new features and adjustments to the Tuono V4 equipment. The system helps the rider to reach his/her limits in complete safety, allowing gradual improvements. This has been made possible by the introduction of new adaptive/predictive components for the Wheely, Traction and Slide control.
The predictive component of the algorithm processes the vehicle parameters in real time (speed, lean angle, accelerations, throttle opening, etc.) to prepare the system intervention in advance, in a gradual, targeted manner. In addition, the advanced software continuously analyzes the vehicle’s dynamic responses and individual driving style, allowing for even more refined and effective control.
The 6-axis IMU, the Ride-by-Wire and 3 riding modes that control the 3 levels of cornering ABS are standard on both the standard Tuono V4 and the V4 Factory, as are the controls offered by the APRC ( Aprilia Performance Ride Control), the package of control systems derived directly from racing.
The Aprilia Tuono V4 is equipped with fully adjustable Sachs suspension, so everyone can find their own perfect set-up, whether it is more focused on sporty track riding or adventures on public roads. The V4 engine with its unique character and sound is the same as the one on the Tuono V4 Factory. There are two color variants available: Shark Gray and Scorpion Yellow, both of which are matte.
The Aprilia Tuono V4 Factory is equipped as standard with Öhlins’ advanced electronic suspension system, which was developed in close collaboration with Aprilia technicians. The special technology of the Semi-Active Smart EC 2.0 suspension system makes it possible to easily calibrate the fork, shock absorber and steering damper to size. The Track Pack and the Comfort Pack are standard. It is available in the unique color Dark Kraken, which makes the Factory immediately recognizable.
