Formula 1 team Aston Martin Aramco Cognizant pulls the curtain on its new Formula 1 car: the AMR22. Like the other cars in the season, the AMR22 is radically different from its predecessor due to the new regulations.
Just like its predecessor, the Aston Martin AMR22 is painted in the color Aston Martin Racing Green. However, the sticker work differs from last year’s car: the AMR21 still had pink accents due to sponsor BWT, the new car has lime green accents, with which the color scheme resembles that of the Valkyrie AMR Pro. Aston Martin has found a new title sponsor in the form of the Saudi oil company Aramco. For that reason, the team goes through life as Aston Martin Aramco Cognizant, a mouth full. This season Sebastian Vettel (start number 5) and Lance Stroll (start number 18) will once again drive for the British team.

Like Red Bull’s RB18 and Haas’ VF-22, the AMR22 looks less angular than last season’s cars and the large endplates on the front spoiler and on the 18-inch wheels. The Aston Martin differs on a few points from the previously proposed cars. For example, the rear spoiler seems to be a lot flatter than that of the RB18 and to run more upwards at the rear. The floor, air intakes and front wing of the AMR22 also have a significantly different shape. However, the final shape of the car is not yet certain: before the start of the season, the teams often come up with updates that can change certain aerodynamic elements.
Up or down
For Aston Martin, quite a lot depends on the new rules. At the start of the new car presentation, team owner Lawrence Stroll, who took over ailing Racing Point in 2018 and changed its name to Aston Martin, emphasizes once again that he is in the sport to win. It is possible that the new rules and the previously introduced budget cap will ensure that Aston Martin creeps closer to the top. The team is currently finalizing a new factory and is also building its own wind tunnel. Whether those ambitions become reality will become clear at the start of the season on March 20 in Bahrain.
