The old Audi
The last Audi 80 was in its time a car that managed to get its hands together. Now, however, it is mainly a nice embodiment of very different times. Certainly this modest copy, which has been with us for 32 years.
With its rather round shapes, the last Audi 80 was a pretty modern car when it appeared in 1986. In addition, extensive consideration was given to the fact that the 80 had a fully galvanized body, so that rust had to be effectively kept out. The latter has contributed to the fact that quite a few Audi’s 80 have reached a high age, together with the fact that it was also quite good technically. There are also quite a few 80s for sale, but we will highlight this modest 1990s.
The reason we’re grabbing this one is that it’s a delightful epitome of the ‘old Audi’. Although the 80 was quite revolutionary compared to its predecessor, it is now very far removed from the current Audi. Especially this one, with its modest hubcaps, black bumpers and typical color. Wonderfully unpretentious. This also applies to the interior, because this 80 dates back to the time when Audi did not hide a chrome glimmer in every nook and cranny. It looks downright businesslike and functional inside, there is no surplus of joie de vivre. A nice detail is that, in keeping with the rest of the car, the front and rear windows are simply operated with cranks, but that the mirrors are electrically adjustable. There is also a sliding / tilting roof, despite the otherwise fairly bare equipment. Finally, the front and rear mud flaps are also a nice relic from other times.
The plastic accents on the outside could use some love and the upholstery doesn’t look so fresh here and there, but otherwise the 80 doesn’t look bad at all. With 186,000 km of experience in 32 years, there is not really a very eventful existence and the 90 hp 1.8 is simple and reliable. This is one with injection, previously the 1.8 was still available with a carburetor, so that of course makes a difference in performance. Audi’s 80 are apparently not very much on the radar of enthusiasts and so the prices are often not too bad. This copy should fetch €1,895. If it is a bit too simple for your taste or not fresh enough, then there is undoubtedly something nicer in the used range! For example, this slightly more chic 2.0 is available at the same company.
