Audi A7 is eager to replace the A6 – Preview

Audi is lagging behind BMW and especially Mercedes-Benz when it comes to electric offerings, but it will catch up in the coming years. There will be an electric A6, but the current A6 with combustion engines will also have a successor. It’s called A7.

  • Coming in 2025
  • Also as a Limousine

BMW has the i5 and Mercedes-Benz the EQE, so now we have to wait for Audi in the upper middle class. This now has the A6 – just like the EQE – developed purely as an EV, in the nurseries. It will be published this year. But wait a minute, will the A6 soon only be electric? Mercedes still has an E-class and BMW still has a 5-series with combustion engines, shouldn’t Audi answer that? Yep, that’s just going to happen. The current Audi A6 will get a successor with fuel power, only it will be called A7. The odd numbers will soon be for the Audis with combustion engines and the even numbers for the purely electric models. Despite its new ‘name’, the A6 successor largely continues where the current A6 left off. However, there will be more emphasis on electric power, because more conventionally powered cars can no longer escape this nowadays.

The Audi A7 is a further development of the MLB platform on which the A6 now sits. This means that you can in principle expect well-known technology, but more often in combination with electric motors. Count on mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains with a TFSI as the main power source. The plug-ins logically provide an electric range of 100 km or perhaps even more. After all, the Volkswagen Group succeeds in this one segment lower, for example with the Volkswagen Passat and the Skoda Superb. There is also a good chance that you can also top them up at the fast charger, with 50 kW charging capacity. The plug-in hybrid power is not reserved for the home-garden-and-kitchen A7s; Both Mercedes-Benz and BMW are now turning to partially electric powertrains for their sporty engines and the RS7 is also getting plug-in power. Count on a powertrain that may reach 700 hp, after all, Mercedes-AMG has already shown with its plug-ins that the power bar will probably soon be high.

A bit more dynamic

The A6 Avant has been a fairly ‘dynamic’ station wagon for generations and the A7 Avant takes it a step further. More than ever, form comes before function and the design is more sporty than chic. The large grille is flanked by relatively smaller headlights than we are used to, with which the A7 peers into the world even more viciously than the outgoing A6. At the rear you will find more extensive light units with a boomerang shape at the ends. As is common nowadays, they are visually connected with a strip of LED lighting and the logo is illuminated. You may now be thinking, that Avant is nice and all, but will there still be a Limousine? Of course! The four-door A7 is also on its way. That immediately makes you think: what will happen to the current Audi A7? A successor to the five-door positioned slightly above the A6 is not yet in the picture, but never say never. Initially, the choice with the new A7 remains nice and clear, as is now the case with the A6. The unveiling won’t happen until the end of this year at the earliest, but we’ll probably have to wait until next year.
