Audi also made much more profit in 2022

Just like last year, the Audi Group can look back on a record good year. Turnover rose sharply and so did profit, although slightly fewer cars were delivered. Bentley and Lamborghini, which fall under the Audi Group, did deliver more cars (more than ever) and therefore experienced even greater profit growth for the Audi Group as a whole.

The Audi Group, the brand group within Volkswagen that includes Audi, Bentley and Lamborghini, delivered 1,638,638 cars in 2022. 1,614,231 of these wore the Audi rings, compared to 1,680,512 a year earlier. There was also a slight decrease in sales in 2021, but just like then, we do not see this reflected in declining profit figures. On the contrary. Audi reports a turnover increase of 16.4 percent, for a total of 61.8 billion euros. Operating profit even increased by almost 40 percent to 7.6 billion euros. That is an absolute record, says Audi.

Of the Audis delivered in 2022, 118,196 were fully electric, 44 percent more than in 2021. Audi expects to be able to increase this number further in 2023, partly due to the arrival of the Audi Q6 e-tron. The brand wants to offer a fully electric car in every segment from 2027, from 2026 every new model the brand presents will be fully electric and from 2033 it will no longer sell cars with a combustion engine worldwide.

Audi Q4 e-tron from soon also from the factory in Brussels

Audi is busy profiling itself as a premium brand of electric cars, but does not yet want to rule out the possibility that it will also supply cars from the factory in Martorell, Spain. In other words: we are not (yet) getting a hard ‘no’ for a Volkswagen ID2all equivalent from Audi. We already knew that the brand is withdrawing from the premium B segment by not developing a successor to the Audi A1.

Other news about a production location closer to home: the Germans will build the Q4 e-tron in Brussels from the second half of 2023. Now it only builds the Q8 e-tron (Sportback) there. When asked about the European plans for ‘2035’, the brand emphasizes that it hopes for a quick decision, and seems ready for a ban on internal combustion engines. After all, the group has already started the journey towards full electrification. Still: Audi also emphasizes that the EU must pay attention to the business climate for the EV industry, especially when it comes to energy prices and unprocessed raw materials. Audi also mentions the urgency of sustainable energy generation and a more extensive European charging network.

Lamborghini and Bentley record even more profit growth

If we look at Lamborghini and Bentley, we see that there is even stronger profit growth there. Lamborghini increased its profit margin to more than 25 percent for an operating profit of 614 million (393 million over 2021). Bentley went from profit of 389 million in 2021 to 708 million in 2022. Both brands sold more cars in 2022 than ever.
