McLaren would be about to be taken over by Audi or BMW. All three parties are responding to these rumours. BMW already seems to be out of the competition and a takeover by Audi is certainly not yet complete.
The British Car Magazine announced Monday that Audi and BMW would be interested in McLaren. Not long after came coach on the basis of ‘a source within McLaren’ even with the claim that the deal is already done and Audi is taking over all of McLaren. The latter has been vehemently denied by McLaren, which says the rumor is “completely untrue”. The British company does not deny that a takeover is possible. BMW doesn’t seem to be doing it anyway. news agency Reuters understands from BMW that the rumor that it would be interested is false.
At Audi it may still be a case of ‘where there is smoke, there is fire’. Audi denies according to Reuters well that a deal is already in place, like coach, stated, but does indicate that it is ‘open to possibilities for collaboration’. In addition, the Germans do not mention McLaren by name, but it is therefore not as certain as BMW that a McLaren takeover is not an issue at all.
Audi is said to be primarily interested in McLaren because of its presence in Formula 1. Audi and sister brand Porsche have been flirting with the idea of entering Formula 1 for some time. An iconic team like McLaren would probably not be completely rebranded as Audi in that case, but Audi could throw itself into F1 as an engine supplier to the team (and any customer teams). What Audi would do with McLaren Automotive is still difficult to say. With Lamborghini, the Volkswagen Group already has a supercar brand in its portfolio, although the Germans have proven that a wide portfolio of brands with overlapping products does not have to do them any harm.
