“Audi is going back to friendlier, rounder design”

‘Comes through the war’

“Audi is going back to friendlier, rounder design”

Striking rumor: Audi would like to go back to a friendlier, rounder and less aggressive design language. According to the design boss of the brand, this is a general trend, which we will also see elsewhere in the car world.

According to design boss Marc Lichte, future Audis will be “softer and friendlier” than we are used to from the brand, says the international Top Gear. We can’t call that a total surprise, because Audi’s recent concept cars are already characterized by relatively rounded shapes. Just look at the range of Sphere concepts, for example, with the Activesphere being the most recent addition. The forthcoming Audi A6 E-tron also seems to be taking on more organic shapes than its regular A6 brother.

Nevertheless, we can call this promise striking. After all, in recent years we have seen increasingly aggressive, busier and sharper designs in the car world, especially at BMW and Audi. The current A6 is a lot sharper in shape than its predecessor, just like the A8 and various SUVs.

According to Lichte, the tide is not only turning at Audi, but other brands will also return to friendlier designs where possible. The design boss cites the explanation that electric platforms offer more opportunities to distinguish a car from the competition. Aggressive bumpers, grilles and lighting units therefore play a lesser role.

Another cause mentioned by Lichte is less obvious: the war in Ukraine. According to the German, this threatening situation would also move the car world to a more accessible style.
