Test Peugeot e-2008 – feels bigger and now goes further

A little less than four years after the market introduction of the Peugeot 2008, it is time for a facelift.

Plug with style

Ten years ago, Peugeot created a new segment with the first 2008, that of the compact crossover. Its successor, the current model, debuted in 2019 and is much more emphatically an SUV. Just under four years after the market introduction, it is time for a facelift, including an improved electric version. The e-2008 is ready for a first introduction.

How can you recognize the renewed Peugeot 2008?

The 2008 may be in the same segment as the Renault Captur and Toyota Yaris Cross, among others, but it looks a lot bigger. Although it is somewhat longer than many of its peers, it is not significantly higher or wider. Especially the high nose and the impressive front put you on the wrong foot. Speaking of the front: it is completely new and shows the current face of Peugeot, as the renewed 508 already has. The most eye-catching detail is the new daytime running lights, which no longer consist of the well-known ‘tusks’, but are formed by three upright LED stripes on either side of the front. This makes it even easier to recognize a Peugeot in the interior mirror. It is also striking that the type designation of the bonnet moved to a spot just above the grille, which also features the new brand logo. The Allure and GT have a slightly nicer grille than the base Active model, which you can recognize by the horizontal bars.

Has the back also been addressed?

The rear lights no longer have the three vertical stripes, but are made up of six horizontal light bars. The brand name is written larger and all other indications are in a new font on the tailgate. We can also report about the exterior that new colors and other wheels are available. Incidentally, metallic paint is standard and there are two colors for which you pay €250 extra.

What are the main changes in the interior?

An important change inside is that all versions now have a 10-inch large screen centrally on the dashboard. The screen above the steering wheel is of the same size and with the GT equipped with 3D technology. What remains is an above-average beautiful interior, in terms of design and finish. Of course, the infotainment system has new software and the home screen has a different layout. Smartphone display goes wireless and the wireless charger is now good for 15 (was 5) watts.

Is the Peugeot e-2008 just as spacious as the other versions?

As in all Peugeot models, it takes a little more time to find an ideal seating position, which has everything to do with the position of the steering wheel and instruments. And even when you’re sitting down, the 2008 feels bigger than it is. You look out over the wide hood and there is enough headroom, even in the version with panoramic roof. By the way, you’re also good in the back. The luggage space is smaller (350 instead of 405 litres) than that of the fuel versions. In addition to the range and a graphical representation of the energy supply in the battery, you can now also see the percentage.

What is the range of the new Peugeot e-2008?

The most important news of the e-2008 is hidden. The engine now has 156 hp and the battery capacity has increased to 54 kWh, of which just over 50 kWh is actually usable. In addition, the overall efficiency has improved, the brand promises. We drove the first e-2008 as an endurance test for six months and were quite enthusiastic about that car, except for the range. On average, it was between 230 and a maximum of 280 kilometers, where we note a WLTP of 406 km for the new version. Given our recent experience with the Opel Astra Electric, which has the same powertrain, we are hopeful.

What does the new Peugeot e-2008 cost?

It is immediately noticeable how pleasantly comfortable the suspension of the electric 2008 is and that it feels like a larger car in terms of handling, without giving the impression of being obese. The direct power of the electric motor lends a helping hand, together with the direct, non-nervous steering. This Peugeot is not a bloody fast EV, but with its 156 hp and the instantly available 270 Nm it is a nice and smooth car. You recover energy with the brake pedal or by switching on mode B, then you brake extra strongly on the electric motor that acts as a dynamo at that moment and thus increases the range. With its fresh appearance, beautiful interior and good driving characteristics, the e-2008 is very successful. It comes first as a First Edition and then costs almost 46 grand, we expect the entry-level version to cost around forty.
