Used diesel car more popular than second-hand EV

In the market for a used car? Then we have bad news. The average asking price of a used car has been high for months, but has now reached the highest point since January 2022. This is evident from the monthly market report of Automotive Mediaventions, the parent company of Gaspedal.nl and Autotrack.
In October, the average asking price of a second-hand car offered on Gaspedal.nl and Autotrack was no less than €24,401. On average, used cars have not been that expensive since January 2022. It is striking that the average search price – i.e. the price at which consumers look for a car on these two sales platforms – and the average asking price are very different. The average search price in October was more than 5 grand lower at €19,345. Rarely have the seller and buyer disagreed so strongly as in October.
Also striking: the average price of the hunt for a used electric car in October was historically low at €37,765, according to Automotive MediaVentions. The average search price for a petrol car in October, at €24,860, was over 2 percent lower than a month earlier. The average search price of diesel cars was also lower at €21,084 (-3.3 percent) than in September. The average search price for a used car with a hybrid drivetrain was €45,647. Never before has the average budget for a used hybrid been so large.
Used diesel car more popular than second-hand EV
People are still looking for a used diesel car more often than a second-hand electric car. In 9.1 percent of the searches, a used car with a diesel engine was searched for, while the share of EVs in the searches is 8.3. Conventional petrol cars are by far the most popular with a share of 53 percent of searches. Hybrid cars with a petrol engine accounted for a quarter of searches. 2.2 percent of the searches were for a car that uses LPG. 1.4 percent of the searches focused on a hybrid car with a diesel engine. 0.8 percent of searches were for a car with an engine that can handle both gasoline and CNG/natural gas.
Hatchback and automatic in the lead
Just under a quarter of searches were for a hatchback. This makes the hatchback the most popular body shape among Dutch used car buyers. The station wagon is in second place with a share of 22.8 of the searches, followed by SUVs in third place (15.4 percent) and sedans (9.5 percent) in fourth place. The continued popularity of MPVs is striking. 8.9 percent of searches were for a used MPV.
For the umpteenth time, the percentage of searches looking for a used car with a manual transmission is shrinking. An overwhelming 82.3 percent of searches were for an automatic car. The remaining 17.7 percent was for second-hand cars with a manual transmission.
Volkswagen is the most popular brand on the used car market
As in previous months, Volkswagen was the most searched for brand in October. 10.2 percent of searches were for a used Volkswagen. The Top 5 is mainly a German party. After all, in places two to four we find Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Toyota is the only non-German car brand in the Top 5. The Volkswagen Golf was the most searched for model, followed by the Volkswagen Polo and BMW 3-series.
