Heat exhaustion usually occurs when we exert ourselves too much physically in high temperatures and drink too little. You then sweat out a lot of fluid and electrolytes and do not compensate for this loss with sufficient water. Heat exhaustion occurs, for example, when you do sports on hot days in summer, go long hikes or physically exhaust yourself in the midday heat at work, in the garden or in the house with manual work. It occurs when our body begins to sweat profusely from heat and exertion and the blood vessels in the skin enlarge. Both are mechanisms to better dissipate heat and thus regulate body temperature. Depending on the extent of exhaustion, different and sometimes very unspecific symptoms occur. The first signs usually include thirst, dizziness, coordination problems, fatigue and muscle pain. The following symptoms can also occur:

  • weak but faster pulse
  • headache
  • nausea and vomiting
  • shortness of breath

If you don’t rest when you have symptoms of heat exhaustion and you continue to not drink fluids, heat stroke can develop. This can lead to shortness of breath, fainting or seizures. The heat damage can then become life-threatening. Therefore, if you see someone who may be suffering from heat stroke, you should call 911 immediately. as First aid measure you should take the person out of the sun to a cooler and shady place and cool them down with cold water and towels, for example. In the case of children, the elderly and people with a weakened immune system, it is particularly important to act quickly.

In order to avoid heat exhaustion in the first place, you can observe the following tips, especially on hot days:

  • Do not do strenuous tasks in high temperatures. You shouldn’t do any sport now either. On hot days, for example, you can move your workout into the early hours of the morning.
  • Drink plenty of water, two glasses of water per hour on hot days. Fresh, water-rich fruits and vegetables can also help you keep your body hydrated. You can too electrolyte drink take to you.
  • Wear light-colored, breathable clothing. This prevents you from sweating too much. Also make sure to wear a sun hat in direct sunlight. Long clothes and suncream also protect yourself from one sunburn.
  • Avoid alcohol – according to the Federal Center for Health Education, this lowers blood pressure and increases the risk of exhaustion in the body.
  • Cool off with a fresh bath or shower. You can also place cloths that you dip in cold water on your forehead, arms and legs to cool down. Make sure, however, that you do not use ice-cold water for this. This leads to the fact that the blood vessels contract and the body can keep the heat inside even better.
