
Warm air plays around the toes: for many, no shoe stands as much for summer as the flip -flop. For several reasons, it can be unhealthy for our feet, as an orthopedist explains.
Flipflops bring holiday feeling into everyday life. Living in the slip in summer is not necessarily a good idea. At least not if – as with many – there is a misaligned foot.
Main problem: Flip flops have no side limitation
If you then travel a lot in flip -flops, you have to expect the foot misalignment to worsen. After all, the flaps have no limitation on the sides – this invites the foot to become even wider.
In the long run, the stress is increasingly moving “to areas of the sole of the foot that are not suitable for this,” says Michael Lehnert. The consequence can be pain and nerve irritation, up to deaf toes. A hallux valgus, a so -called bale toe, is also favored.
From an orthopedic point of view, Flipflops have two further disadvantages:
- Many of them have only one plate, thin sole, so no footbed that relieves the foot and strengthen its muscles.
- And: “In order not to lose the flip -flops while walking, you have to claw a bit with your toes,” says Michael Lehnert. The toes are cramped by this – this can also cause pain in the long run.
What flip-flop fans can do: orthopedist gives tips
Flip flops are not optimal for the foot, but the orthopedist does not want to demonize the flaps. But he advises to wear them, so “not eight or ten hours a day”. Anyone who has bought a new couple for an upcoming vacation, for example, is the best thing to do for an hour at home.
What the feet-not only in the flip-flop season-is good are regular gymnastics units. For example, you can put a towel on the floor that you move in with your toes, as Michael Lehnert suggests. This exercise trains the many small muscles in the foot and thus pays for its stability.
What is also good for the little muscles in the foot: “Run a little more barefoot, at home, but also outside, for example in the sand,” says Michael Lehnert.
