After a few weeks of bulky stuff like the Polestar 2 and Ford Explorer PHEV, it’s time to shop in the smallest segment again this week. We settle in the Mitsubishi configurator and stick with the model that is said to be the only one remaining: the Space Star.
So after a few weeks full of standard leather upholstery, huge screens for the multimedia and cameras and radars, we will dive into the price lists this week with a smaller budget at popular request. With only € 12,000 in our pocket, we arrive at the configurator of the Mitsubishi Space Star. The compact five-door is Mitsubishi’s only non-lifted model and is rumored to remain the only one available in our continent along with the L200. The ‘shopping car’ has been in (again) facelifted form at the dealers for some time now. Mitsubishi puts two copies on the engine list: the 1.0 MIVEC and the 1.2 MIVEC. These are two turbo-free three-cylinders with 71 or 80 hp. It is of course easy to guess that the entry-level model is equipped with the 1.0-liter with 71 hp. The cart is therefore not a real stripe puller: the Space Star takes 15.7 seconds to get from 0 to 100, and can then continue up to 172 km / h.
Lovers of this section pay attention, because it gets even more fun. Much nicer, although the exterior does not immediately reveal that. For example, all body parts are neatly sprayed in the basic white paint color. So we do not find black mirror caps or bumpers: everything is neatly in the same color. However, the wheel arches are filled with 14-inch steel wheels on which plastic caps are clicked. Savings also have to be made for LED lighting: halogen shines into the world everywhere. Remarkable detail: because the rear lights are not equipped with LEDs, this facelifted Space Star still gets the old well-known lamps. Although the photos suggest otherwise, the spot for the fog lights remains empty. These are only available as standard from the Nova. Other things such as integrated flashing lights in the mirror caps are only standard from the Nova (€ 16,490).
Inside it is really tasty. The compartment in the center tunnel where a radio can sit is filled with a piece of plastic as standard. So for entertainment, passengers even have to sing a song in the Space Star. The same applies to the climate control: the old ARKO (All Windows Can Open) must be taken out of the closet, because an air conditioning is too ambitious for the Entry. To open all doors, the key has to be put in the old fashioned door. Fortunately, Mitsubishi provides its entry-level vehicle with some other luxury: Space Star has electric windows at the front, a folding rear seat, light and rain sensor and electrically adjustable exterior mirrors. Strangely enough, a parcel shelf has to be saved. With a zipper of driver assistance systems, Mitsubishi also makes up for a lot, because in addition to AMS and EBD (electronic brake force distribution), the Space Star comes standard with Brake Assist, Emergency Stop Signal and Active Stability Traction Control.
The Space Star Cool + is in the showrooms for € 1,500 more. That can be a good investment for a bit more convenience, because in addition to an air conditioning, extensive radio with DAB + and USB connections, this version also has central locking and a rear shelf with lighting in the luggage compartment.
