Back to Basics: Skoda Octavia (2020)

The brand new Skoda Octavia has now been in the Dutch showrooms for several months as an extra luxurious First Edition with the 150 hp 1.5 TSI, but was joined by new basic versions at the beginning of this month. It is therefore high time to get the new Czech for this section through the configurator.

Skoda Octavia (Combi) Ambition

€ 28,790

Until recently, an Octavia customer with a well-filled bank account had to come to the dealer to order a new one. For the Octavia only available as 1.5 TSI First Edition until recently, Skoda asked a minimum of € 33,050. For the station wagon you lost at least € 34,350. Now Skoda thought the time was right to also put the basic versions on the price list. The regular editions also bring the 1.0 TSI with them, which of course lowers the price compared to the 1.5. That is now a well-known block, which is also available in various other Volkswagen products. As with those family members, this power source in the Octavia is standard linked to a manual six-speed gearbox. With the blown 1.0, the Octavia needs just under 11 seconds to sprint from a standstill to a speed of 100 km / h. The starting price of the Octavia Hatchback with 1.0 is € 27,290. For the Octavia Combi with that 1.0, you lose € 1,500 extra. The attentive reader will immediately see that the previously ‘always cheaper and more spacious Octavia’ is more expensive than a bare Volkswagen Golf. However, that car is powered by a 90 hp version of the 1.0 TSI. A Golf with the 110 hp 1.0 is just under € 1,500 more expensive than this Octavia.

Skoda Octavia Combi 1.0 TSI Ambition

The Skoda Octavia is available as Ambition as a five-door hatchback or as a Combi station wagon. As mentioned, this price difference amounts to € 1,500. That extra amount is purely in the other coach, because in terms of equipment both versions correspond. On the outside, an Ambition distinguishes itself from the rest by a somewhat cheaper-looking finish. Take the window frames, roof rails and trim strips in the bumper: all chrome trim pieces of the more luxurious versions make way for black plastic ones. In other areas, however, an entry-level Octavia is not much inferior to the rest. For example, LED lighting all around is standard. The Ambition has 16-inch alloy wheels and has parking sensors in the rear bumper. It is striking that headlight cleaners are not standard, while the Style (the next step in the implementation list with exactly the same lamps) does. The Style is also a bit nicer in the stuff in other areas. Take keyless entry and start, parking sensors that are also in the front bumper and standard seat heating in the front row.

Now it may sound like Ambition is a bare-bones affair, but that is certainly not so bad. Although you have to take the key in hand to open the Skoda, it can then be put in your pocket, because the Octavia does have a keyless start function as standard. Furthermore, Skoda does not hold back in the least, because take the 10-inch touch screen for the (wireless Smartlink +) multimedia and navigation, DAB + radio, cruise control, an automatic air conditioning over two zones and a virtual cockpit: everything is neatly present. A light and rain sensor, Skoda Connect and center armrest are also always present.

So you can actually stay in a ‘bare’ Octavia. Highly recommended: the Energy Blue-blue paintwork is free, but after a small extra investment (€ 790 to € 990) you can choose from many other colors.
