Okay, this Toyota Mirai of € 81,095 may not be a true “Back to Basics”, but it is interesting to see what features this progressive model is equipped with. Is there still something to choose or is it really full for the price?
Toyota Mirai Executive € 81,095
While various brands are now entering the wonderful world of electric cars with a plug, Toyota is still looking for a different ‘fuel’. In fact, for quite a while, because the Toyota Mirai was presented to the world as a fuel cell car at the end of 2014. However, it then took another three years before Toyota brought the hydrogen-loving Mirai to the Netherlands as well. Since then, 64 copies on Dutch registration have been released. A large part of them also drive around as a taxi. The Dutch consumer is therefore still somewhat reserved. Not surprising, because in addition to the high purchase price of the car, finding a filling station with hydrogen is not an easy task, given the limited number of them. Today is the time to see if the equipment can still win over buyers.
This is the perfect car for people with choice stress. Toyota only offers one version. That already starts with the powertrain. The Mirai is powered by a 154 hp electric motor, which gets its energy from the hydrogen cell. Although filling this can still be a challenge, the Mirai does come a long way on its full tank. It takes 550 km (NEDC) before it has to be refueled again.
Colors
There is also nothing to choose in terms of equipment, because Toyota only offers the Mirai as an ‘Executive’. As a result, there is again little to personalize. For example, the 17-inch alloy wheels are standard, as are LED lighting all around, parking sensors in the front and rear bumpers and other details such as the ‘shark fin antenna’. The only way to distinguish yourself with a Mirai is with its color. Remarkably, even that doesn’t cost anything extra with this car. Customers can therefore choose a color from the color palette free of charge, which covers a total of six colors, from deep red to pearl white. You will find all the different colors in the photos above. The most striking in our opinion is the ‘Pure Blue Metallic’.
After using the ‘Smart Entry’ we find an interior that is at least as futuristic as the exterior design. The seats are covered with leather and can be heated in both the first and second row. The front seats are electrically adjustable. Other things, such as a separate climate control, electrically adjustable side mirrors and a steering wheel full of buttons for, among other things, the cruise control, are also present in every Mirai. The central 7-inch screen provides access to a comprehensive system with navigation (with three years of free updates), DAB + radio and a view to the reversing camera. The sound is blown into the car by means of a JBL sound system.
Toyota is also generous enough to add Toyota Safety Sense to the list at no extra cost. In addition to adaptive cruise control, this package includes Blind Spot Mirror, a sensor that spots passing traffic while parking and a pre-collision system.
The current Mirai will be relieved by a completely new generation next year. According to Toyota, hard work is being done on the biggest ‘problem’ of the car, because several hydrogen stations will open their doors this year. The total number in the Netherlands must be 17 units by December.
