Back to basics: Volkswagen Golf (2020)

The moment that many loyal visitors to this section have been waiting for is there. Are we ready? Volkswagen has put the configurator of the new entry-level Golf online. This has the 90 hp Golf in its march.

Volkswagen Golf 1.0 TSI
€ 25,995

90 hp? Yes, as an absolute starter, Volkswagen parks the Golf 1.0 TSI with 90 hp in the price list. This engine is only available in the most standard Golf. Those who opt for a more luxurious Life, Life Business or Style version, can choose from all engines from the 1.0 TSI with 110 hp. Power increases to 150 hp for the 1.5 eTSI. “Our” 90 hp 1.0-liter is the only one to receive the manual five-speed gearbox, every other Golf will get a six-speed or seven-speed DSG. It is remarkable that it makes no difference in terms of CO2 emissions, because both 1.0 TSIs emit 104 g / km. Those who opt for the entry-level motor must then do it with a top speed of 188 km / h and a sprint time of 11.2 seconds to reach 100 from a standstill.

Led

On the outside it is not immediately noticeable that this is necessarily the least luxurious Golf. The lamps are filled all around with LEDs, but those who want LED taillights with dynamic turn signals must pay € 849. Front fog lamps are not included as standard (from Style Business). All body parts are also neatly sprayed in color. Take the new slats in the front bumper, the mirror caps and the handles. This happens in Urano Gray, the only color that has no extra charge. The prices for the other colors vary between € 211 for Pure White, € 555 for all metallic colors, including the introduction color Limon Yellow and € 932 for pearl white. Something that sets the basic Golf apart from the rest are the wheels. Nothing alloy, Volkswagen offers 15-inch steel wheels with caps at no extra charge. Those who prefer light metal should pay between € 1,034 and € 2,534 for 15- to 19-inch wheels respectively. This Golf is also the only one without parking sensors (+ € 528).

Cruise control

Inside you sit on standard chairs. This is the only version without the comfort seats with extra lumbar support. However, every driver gets two screens in front of him as standard: one for the digital cockpit and one for the multimedia. That multimedia system is quite richly equipped and is also standard in the more luxurious versions. The screen is 8.25 inches in size and has multiple connection options. The big absentee is a standard navigation. However, Volkswagen does offer the online We Connect services as standard. Buttons for operating the system are located on the plastic steering wheel. VW asks € 159 for a leather steering wheel. Do not look in vain for buttons for the adaptive cruise control: it is not there but is optionally available for € 290. An air conditioning can be removed. This can be set automatically, but is adjustable over only 1 zone. In terms of safety systems, every Golf comes with everything as standard, such as Front Assist, City Emergency Braking and Lane Assist.

Anyone who thinks it is a bit too meager, better save for Life. This costs at least € 29,660, but also gets 110 hp under the hood, 16-inch alloy, adaptive cruise control, parking sensors and a wireless phone charger.
