Bentley Mark VI (1952) – In the Wild

A real Mulliner!

Bentley Mark VI (1952) – In the Wild

Actually, it is always an impressive sight when you encounter a Bentley in public. Yet a Mark VI like this is a completely different story than the first Bentayga. It’s also extra rare!

Isn’t it a stately appearance, this Bentley Mark VI? You would almost think that a member of the British royal family could leave at any moment. That has probably happened in the past with the Bentley Mark IV. Yet, despite its stately appearance, the Bentley Mark VI as we have it before us here thanks to AutoWeek forum member HarmenA was not exactly the first choice for transporting heads of state or other dignitaries. We are dealing with a real Mark VI ‘Lightweight Saloon’. The focus was more on the person behind the wheel than on whoever was in the back.

The Lightweight Saloon was a creation of coachbuilder HJ Mulliner. In short, he took a Bentley Mark VI and fitted it with a largely aluminum body with more exuberant curves. This, as the name suggests, reduced the weight considerably and the Mark VI now also had the stronger and slightly larger 4.5 inline-six under the hood. As a result, despite its size and stately appearance, it was also a smooth car, intended for the wealthy who liked to keep the wheel in their own hands. In terms of handling, however, it remained a basically pre-war battleship.

Today, Mulliner is of course also a well-known name at Bentley when it comes to very exclusive creations and this is also a rare car. There were only 41 of these Lightweight Saloons made by Mulliner. So there is at least one of them in the Netherlands since 2012, when it got its dark blue Dutch classic plates. The Mark VI is now with its third Dutch owner, who has had it since May 2018. So it has been enjoyed for five and a half years and now it is also in the spotlight on AutoWeek.nl. What does a man want more?
